Arts & crafts donation update

Greenbuttercup CIC were honoured to receive a cheque from Mrs Tessa Parker, to mark the passing of her Aunt, Mrs Joyce Davies.  Mrs Parker and her sister had decided that in lieu of flowers, they would like to support a group who worked with people with Dementia – as unfortunately their aunt had struggled with the disease in the last years of her life.  Mrs Parker and her husband John had visited our ‘Arts & Crafts’ group during John’s term as Mayor of Romsey, and they called in again to present the cheque at our recent 1st Birthday celebrations.
‘Thank-you’ Tessa, for thinking of us at this sad time.  We really appreciate your support.

Greenbuttercup CIC & arts & crafts 1st birthday celebrations

1st Birthday Celebrations

Greenbuttercup CIC, in conjunction with ROMDAG, have now been running their ‘Arts & Crafts’ sessions for people living with Dementia and their carers for one year.  The sessions were first promoted at Demfest last September and they began shortly afterwards.  What started as a trial, has now become a regular event.  Participants have enjoyed trying out a wide range of crafts throughout the year, including: papercraft, painting, printing, clay, glass painting, weaving, card-making and mosaics.  They have had their work displayed at Romsey’s ‘Inside Out Art Trail’ and in the Abbey United Reformed Church during Romsey Festival, and their painted glass tealight holders were sold in aid of funds at a Charities Fair earlier this year.

The importance of this venture has been acknowledged by many, and financial support for the last year has come from: Test Valley Arts Foundation; Romsey Town Council; Romsey, Chandler’s Ford & District Round Table; and private donations – for which we are very thankful.  Participants are charged £3 per person to attend, but it will be necessary to continue to fundraise in order to ensure these sessions continue.

Members of Greenbuttercup CIC and group regulars were joined on Friday, October 6th by some distinguished guests to help them celebrate the group’s first birthday.

The Mayor of Test Valley Cllr Carl Borg-Neal & his Mayoress Mrs Maria Neal; the Deputy Mayor of Romsey Cllr Dorothy Baverstock; the Chair & Vice-Chair of RAODS (Romsey Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society) Neil Gwynne and Barry Young; Andover MIND’s new Dementia Adviser for Romsey Jo Frost; ROMDAG’s Ian Bradford; and the Former Mayor of Romsey Cllr John Parker & his wife Mrs Tessa Parker; were welcomed with coffee and cake.  They were thanked for their support of ROMDAG’s activities, and especially in helping to make the ‘Arts & Crafts’ sessions a success.  The guests were then invited to see what the group were making, and some even joined in !  As it was October, the group were enjoying themselves making Halloween Masks – both beautiful and frightful – and some of the creations you certainly wouldn’t have wanted to meet on a dark night !

The ‘Arts & Crafts’ fun sessions usually take place on the first Friday of the month from 10.30a.m. – 12.30p.m. in the Green Room at the Plaza Theatre in Romsey (by kind permission of RAODS).  However, there are occasions when the date has to change, if something is already booked at the Theatre.  No experience is necessary, and all tuition and materials are provided along with drinks and biscuits.  At each session, there is a ‘have-a-go’ session, and the programme for the final two sessions of the year is as follows:

Friday, November 3rd – Making Collages

Friday, December 15th – Christmas Crafts and Mince Pies (please note the date)

If you know someone who may enjoy this, they are welcome to come along and try us out for free.  There is parking behind the theatre, and entry is by the side door up the accessible ramp.

For further information, please contact Pamela@shadow26.plus.com or 01794 501605, or just turn up at one of our sessions.

Study research opportunity

A research project at the University of Southampton is exploring why people with dementia do physical activity; what do they value about physical activity and what benefits physical activity brings them. This will inform professionals on what should they aim for when promoting physical activity programmes for people with dementia.

We are interviewing relatives and friends of people living with dementia to learn more about their views on physical activity.

If you wish to be interviewed or would like more information, please contact Ana-Carolina Gonçalves by:

Jane runs for Romdag

The wonderful Jane has decided to run the 53 mile Race to the King! and donate to Romdag. Here is what she has to say:

“Until fairly recently we were unaware of this wonderful group of volunteers. However, like many other people, our lives became affected by dementia when Mum was diagnosed with the life changing illness at the relatively young age of 65. Mum’s diagnosis led us to finding out about the fabulous support that Romdag gives to the local community. They provide a friendly, supportive group where people who have been diagnosed with dementia and family members can go for support. The activities they organise provide a valuable lifeline to my family and I’m sure have impacted positively on the lives’ of many others. Their success requires the kindness and commitment of their team of volunteers and financial support to keep these excellent activities going.

To help raise some money for this really worthy cause, a group of us will be taking part in an Ultra Marathon. On the 24th June 2017 we will be participating in the Race to the Kings, this is a 53 mile race along the South Downs which finishes on the steps of Winchester Cathederal. We are aiming to complete the event in under 24 hours. This will be a challenging and emotional event for us all but I’m sure it will be a lot easier than living with dementia every day of your life.

If you feel you would like to support us with this event we would be very grateful. Your support will be helping to put a smile on many peoples’ faces!”

Let’s all show our support for Jane!!

Good luck, we believe in you!!

Alongside my role with Romdag, I am also a PhD student at the University of Southampton. As part of my PhD, I am looking to speak to sons & daughters of people with dementia about their experiences of risk & safety for their parents with dementia.

If you are, or know anybody who might be interested in getting involved, please forward on my study poster and contact details: aca1g15@soton.ac.uk

I am so grateful for all of the support from those of you I have met and spoken to and the rest of the Romdag team for their support of my PhD.

Thanks & best wishes
